On behalf of our private client, we are seeking an experienced, polished and highly professional Butler to join a well-established team at a prestigious private residence in London.
Working as part of a small team of Butlers under the direction of the House Manager and Senior Butler, you will play a central role in delivering an exceptional standard of service to the principal, their family and guests.
This is a varied and demanding role requiring someone who is calm under pressure, takes genuine pride in their work, and is equally comfortable executing formal dining service and assisting with the day-to-day running of the household.
Working hours / schedule:
5 to 5.5 days per week, depending on the needs of the household - flexibility required
Duties include (but are not limited to):
Daily Service & Front of House:
- Participating as a key member of the Butler team in the day-to-day service function of the residence
- Laying tables and preparing dining rooms, cloakrooms and bars for formal meals and events
- Cleaning and polishing silver, china, glassware and brass to an impeccable standard
- Serving at table — food, wines and beverages — to the highest standard of formal service
- Answering doors and telephones, attending to guests on arrival and departure, taking hats and coats
- Ensuring the residence is warm, well-lit and well-presented at all times
- Distributing newspapers, trays, drinks and other items as required
- Maintaining adequate stocks of ice, juices, soft drinks, teas, coffees and household provisions
- Keeping all front-of-house and back-of-house areas clean, tidy and well-organised
- Running errands as required
Events & Functions:
- Preparing full function mise-en-place for formal and informal entertaining
- Serving drinks and meals at events to the highest standard
- Ensuring any casual event staff are fully briefed and comfortable with service expectations
- Ensuring the residence is thoroughly clean and restored after all events
Valet & Personal Service (when required):
- Providing a complete valet service to male members of the principal’s family and guests when called upon
- Pressing, steaming and ironing clothing; cleaning and polishing shoes
- Collecting, checking and arranging laundry and dry cleaning
- Packing and unpacking for travel; checking and laying out formal wear for events
- Maintaining all clothing, suitcases and sporting equipment in excellent condition
General Household:
- Liaising with the House Manager, Senior Butler and household team to determine and fulfil daily service requirements
- Deputising for the Senior Butler when required
- Assisting other household departments when workload allows
- Adhering to all Health & Safety requirements and recording any accidents or incidents as appropriate
- Carrying out any additional duties as reasonably requested by the principal
The ideal candidate will have:
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a formal private household or high-end hospitality environment
- Fluent written and spoken English, with excellent interpersonal skills and the confidence to engage with people at the highest levels
- Good knowledge of formal food and beverage service, with some knowledge of fine wines
- Good knowledge of the care of top-quality clothing, linens, silverware, china and glassware
- A calm, composed and professional manner, with the ability to work effectively within a team under pressure
- Impeccable personal presentation, complete discretion and a genuine commitment to high standards of service
- Desirable: certified apprenticeship in formal domestic service; First Aid certificate; WSET Intermediate Certificate in Wines and Spirits; NVQ Level 2 in Hospitality
Salary: £50-55k gross DOE
To start: As soon as possible
